tanzanite Origin

Beneath the surface of the rich African soil lie the most sought-after treasures and gems known to man.

The Origin of Tanzanite: Africa's Most Captivating Gem

A remarkable discovery in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro changed the world of precious gems forever. Tanzanite, in all its shades of violet and blue (and a thousand times rarer than a diamond) was first discovered in Tanzania’s Merelani Hills – a modest 4 km strip of land that still remains the world’s only source of tanzanite stone.

A geological marvel

The formation of tanzanite tells a story as fascinating as the gem itself. Born from intense heat and pressure beneath Africa’s surface, this rare stone developed under extraordinary circumstances when tectonic movements and volcanic activity in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro created perfect conditions for tanzanite’s creation, making it truly unique to this corner of East Africa.

The discovery

In 1967, a Masai tribesman noticed a cluster of striking blue crystals surfacing from the earth. These crystals would soon be identified as a variety of the mineral zoisite, but their exceptional qualities warranted more investigation.

Today, tanzanite stands in a classification of its own – a testament to both its distinctive properties and the power of Tiffany & Co, who launched tanzanite to the world in 1968, declaring it “the first transparent deep blue gemstone to be discovered in more than 2,000 years”.

Rare beyond compare

More than 50 years later, and Tanzania is still the only place on earth where tanzanite is found. With just one mine in operation and a steadily decreasing supply, tanzanite is often called the ‘one-generation gem’, which only adds to its value and allure.
Its scarcity, combined with its captivating range of colours (from the palest blue to the deepest violet) makes tanzanite stone the perfect way to mark significant moments.

“Tanzanite is unique because it’s a trichroic gemstone, meaning it displays three distinct colours: lavender, a rich violet-blue hue, and magenta (with overtones of burgundy) visible from certain perspectives. This makes tanzanite rings and tanzanite engagement rings, especially when tanzanite stone is set alongside natural diamonds, incredibly striking.”

FAQS

Where did tanzanite originate?

Tanzanite was first discovered in northern Tanzania in 1967 in a 4 km strip of land near Mount Kilimanjaro. It remains the only place tanzanite is found on the planet.

Yes. Tanzanite is regarded as 1000 times rarer than a diamond. Its rarity is based on its singular location in Tanzania, limited supply and unique colour properties.

Over the last few years, the Tanzanian government has worked hard to ensure that tanzanite stone is mined in the most ethical, responsible way possible. This includes ensuring that the last remaining mine uses safe and fair mining practices – and that surrounding communities benefit directly from the mining of one of their most precious resources.
