Tissot
In 1853, Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile joined forces to set up Tissot in the small town of Le Locle, where it still remains. Today, Tissot is a company of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest Swiss watch producer and distributor.
From 1853, the beauty and reliability of Tissot timepieces received numerous awards. Tissot has continually been striving from innovation, whether in the technical area or its designs, to birth models which play a key role in watchmaking history, staying true to its slogan “Innovators by tradition”.

Their commitment to precision is evident in their role as the official timekeeper for sports organizations worldwide, from basketball to motorcycling, where timing is everything. Tissot’s unique approach to watchmaking combines over a century of expertise with a forward-thinking spirit, offering a legacy of craftsmanship you can wear every day.
A New Fashionable Watch
In the 1960s, the watch manufacturers must face new economic challenges and fierce competition. It is not enough to produce watches in big quantities, they must also be sold. Moreover, at Tissot, too many calibres (hence too many models) were produced which constituted a major impediment to automation. Thus, the management decided that modern production should go hand-in-hand with modern design.
Rationalisation of the movements implied improvement in the case design and better marketing. To explain that ‘if the movements might be the same, the cases were very different’ and that ‘rationalisation doesn’t mean monotony’, modern advertising was also conceived on a worldwide scale. Therefore, artists were invited to bring their ideas into the ‘Stylist’ collection. This new series launched in 1965 was mainly designed to appeal to young and trendy people, considered the most important purchasing group in this price range.
The Tissot Difference
Tissot is famous for its fine craftsmanship especially in the movement and inner mechanics of its watches. Many Tissot watches are automatic or quartz powered, reflecting the brand’s long history of accuracy and reliability. For automatics Tissot uses ETA movements, a well known name in the Swiss watch industry, known for their robustness and precision. These movements have many gears and springs that work together to be accurate, powered by the natural movement of the wearer’s wrist.
In terms of construction Tissot watches are built for performance and durability. The cases are often made of stainless steel, titanium or ceramics, materials that offer a balance of strength, lightness and wear resistance. Many Tissot models also have scratch resistant sapphire crystal, that protect the dial while keeping it clear over time. The combination of modern materials like these with the mechanical movement ensures that Tissot watches are not only beautiful but also functional, designed to be worn daily and to last over time.
